UPDATE: Wrongful Death Lawsuit Filed After Legionnaires’ Disease Outbreak
July 2019 — A wrongful death lawsuit has been filed by the family of a woman who died of Legionnaires’ disease she developed at Mount Carmel Grove City hospital hospital’s new $361 million facility.
Fentanyl Overdoses Given to Near-Death Patients in ICU
Lawsuits accuse Dr. Husel of trying to quicken the deaths of very sick patients who were in the ICU. In most cases, the patients were already near death and their family members had decided to stop all life-saving measures — but now, officials at Mt. Carmel are investigating whether the families were misled by Dr. Husel, or if some of his patients might have still had a chance to recover and live.
What is the problem?
Dr. William Husel was a critical care anesthesiologist who worked in the ICU of Mount Carmel Hospital in Ohio from 2013 through 2018. During that time, he is accused of intentionally administering “excessive” or “potentially fatal” doses of the painkiller fentanyl to at least 34 patients, including 27 people who died of fentanyl overdoses.
3 Patients Died After Hospital Was Aware of Problem
Three patients died of fentanyl overdoses in the 4 weeks when Mt. Carmel Hospital was aware that he was intentionally giving patients deadly doses of fentanyl, according to investigators.
Mt. Carmel Wrongful Death Lawsuits
As of January 2019, at least 5 wrongful death lawsuits have been filed against Mt. Carmel Hospital by the family members of people who died of fentanyl overdoses under the care of Dr. Husel.
The first lawsuit was filed on behalf of Janet Kavanaugh, a 79 year-old woman who died just 18 minutes after Dr. Husel administered a 1,000-microgram overdose of fentanyl through her IV.
The second lawsuit was filed on behalf of Bonnie Austin, a 64 year-old woman who was pronounced brain dead shortly after being treated by Dr. Husel in the ICU. About a week later, her husband grew suspicious after he was notified that she actually died of a fentanyl overdose.
