Pharmacal Recalls MG217 Eczema Cream for Staphylococcus aureus Contamination

On May 8, 2026, Pharmacal of Jackson, Wisconsin, issued a nationwide consumer-level recall of one lot of MG217 Multi-Symptom Treatment Cream & Skin Protectant Eczema Cream. Pharmacal warned that it may be contaminated with Staphylococcus aureus. The company said no infections or adverse events related to this recall have been reported as of the announcement date.

What Is the Risk of Staphylococcus aureus?

Staphylococcus aureus, commonly called “staph,” is a bacteria that lives harmlessly on the skin of many healthy people but can cause serious infection when it enters the body through broken or compromised skin.

Because eczema cream is designed to be applied directly to inflamed, cracked, or broken skin, contamination of the product creates a direct route for the bacteria to enter the body.

In its FDA-published recall notice, Pharmacal described the risk as follows:

“Use of the product could result in a range of infections from localized to severe or life-threatening adverse events. Patients with weakened immune systems or compromised skin — such as those with wounds, burns, or skin disorders — are at increased risk for serious infections, including skin and skin structure infections, infective endocarditis (infection of the heart valves), bone and joint infections, bloodstream infections, and life-threatening conditions like sepsis and septic shock.”

Possible Staphylococcus aureus infections include:

  • Skin and soft tissue infections — boils, abscesses, cellulitis, impetigo
  • Bloodstream infections (bacteremia)
  • Sepsis and septic shock
  • Infective endocarditis (heart valve infection)
  • Pneumonia
  • Osteomyelitis (bone infection)
  • Septic arthritis (joint infection)
  • Toxic shock syndrome

Some strains, such as methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), are resistant to common antibiotics and are linked to longer hospital stays, higher treatment costs, and increased mortality.

Who Is at Highest Risk?

Pharmacal identified two groups at greatest risk: people with weakened immune systems, and people with compromised skin such as wounds, burns, or skin disorders. Eczema patients fall directly into the second category, because the symptoms of eczema involve inflamed, cracked, and broken skin.

Which Products Are Affected?

  • Expiration date: November 2026
  • Product code: 5106

Where Were They Sold?

The recalled product was distributed nationwide through wholesale distributors, retail stores, and internet distributors. Confirmed retail and internet distributors include H-E-B grocery stores and Amazon. H-E-B operates more than 300 stores across Texas, including locations throughout Houston, San Antonio, Austin, and the Rio Grande Valley.

If you have the recalled product at home, Pharmacal recommends that you stop using and discard the product. For updates, visit the FDA recall page.

How Many People Were Affected?

As of the recall announcement, Pharmacal had not received any reports of adverse events related to the contamination. The recall is precautionary and applies to one lot distributed nationwide.

Because the product was widely available at H-E-B grocery stores and Amazon (both of which serve large numbers of Texas customers) the potential exposure is significant. If you used MG217 Eczema Cream from the recalled lot and developed a skin infection, bloodstream infection, or sepsis, our Texas lawyers may be able to help.

A staph infection that turns invasive can result in hospitalization, IV antibiotics, surgery to drain abscesses, and in serious cases, sepsis or death. Treatment for MRSA infections in particular can be lengthy and expensive, and outcomes are worse than for non-resistant strains.

Texans who developed a staph infection after using the recalled MG217 Eczema Cream may be entitled to compensation for medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, and other damages. A Texas product liability lawyer can help you understand your legal options.
