What is the Problem?

On April 27, 2022, the FDA issued a warning about reports of airway obstruction, brain damage and death from silicone-based electromyogram (EMG) endotracheal tubes made by Medtronic.

Medtronic Silicone EMG Tubes Linked to Serious Injuries & Deaths

In a Letter to Healthcare Providers, the FDA warned that reports of “serious adverse events and deaths for these devices” were far more common compared to PVC-based EMG tubes.

The only types of silicone-based EMG endotracheal tubes on the market in the U.S. are made by Medtronic, including:

  • Medtronic NIM Standard Reinforced EMG Endotracheal Tube
  • Medtronic NIM Contact Reinforced EMG Endotracheal Tube

What is the Risk?

Silicone-based EMG endotracheal tubes can fail to ventilate a patient properly. This poses life-threatening risks in an emergency or during surgery. If the device blocks a patient’s airway, they can quickly suffer from oxygen deprivation, brain damage, or death.

Doctors Should Be Prepared to Re-Establish Airway

Due to the risk of airway obstrution, the FDA recommending that doctors should “be prepared to take immediate steps to reestablish a safe airway if ventilation failure occurs. Do not reintubate with a silicone-based EMG endotracheal tube.”

Silicone-based EMG Tubes Linked to Higher Risks

The FDA is still investigating the root cause of the problem. However, it appears that the reported events of airway obstruction are more frequent for silicone-based EMG tubes compared to other tubes, such as tubes made from polyvinyl choloride (PVC), a hard plastic material.

What Are EMG Endotracheal Tubes?

Medtronic NIM silicone-based EMG Endotracheal Tubes are medical devices that are used to open a patient’s airway and provide ventilation during surgery. They use electrodes to monitor nerves in the throat when the patient is connected to an EMG monitor.
