MediHoney and CVS Wound & Burn Gels Recalled for Infection Risk

In January 2026, Integra LifeSciences issued a recall for all MediHoney® Wound and Burn products and certain lots of CVS® Wound Gel due to a risk of serious infections.

No deaths were reported, but at least 14 people reported serious injuries. The problem was linked to an issue with packaging failures that could compromise the sterility of the gel. If the gel is contaminated, it could introduce bacteria and other microbes to an area of burned, wounded, or injured skin. This could lead to a severe infection.

What Is the Problem with MediHoney Wound Dressings?

Integra LifeSciences identified packaging failures in the MediHoney product line that could breach the sterile barrier. A breached sterile barrier means the dressing is no longer protected from outside contamination, so using it on a wound or burn can introduce bacteria and cause a serious infection.

For CVS Wound Gel, the company identified production and process control issues in certain lots carrying the same infection risk. According to the recall:

“Use of product with a breached sterile barrier could lead to patient infection. The inability to use the device due to packaging failures may delay care.”

Recalled Products Linked to 14 Serious Injuries

As of December 19, 2025, Integra LifeSciences reported a total of 14 serious injuries due to the recalled products. There were 11 serious injureis tied to MediHoney and 3 serious injuries tied to CVS Wound Gel. No deaths were reported. Reported injuries and risks include:

  • Wound infections from use of non-sterile dressings on open wounds or burns
  • Delayed wound care due to unusable, compromised products
  • Serious complications in vulnerable patients, including those with surgical wounds, chronic wounds, or severe burns

Texas healthcare facilities, home care patients, and distributors who received these products may have affected individuals who are unaware their injury is connected to this recall.

Texans dealing with wounds and burns — whether from oilfield accidents, farm injuries, construction work, or surgical recovery — rely on sterile wound care products to heal safely.

When the sterile packaging on these products fails, the wound care product itself becomes a source of infection rather than protection. For a patient already dealing with a serious wound or burn, an infection introduced at the wound site can lead to complication. The potential risks include:

  • sepsis
  • delayed healing
  • extended hospitalization
  • permanent injury
  • death
