McDonald’s Stops Selling Salads in 14 States

McDonald’s responded by pulling salads off the menu in over 3,000 restaurants in 14 states: Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, West Virginia, and Wisconsin.

What is Cyclospora?

The single-celled parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis is found in water and a common cause of traveler’s diarrhea.

People who eat food or drink water that is contaminated can develop an intestinal infection with frequent, explosive, watery bowel movements that persist for months without treatment.

Symptoms of Cyclospora Infection

On average, the symptoms of Cyclospora infection begin 7 days after consuming the parasite. The symptoms may come and go, or persist for months. The symptoms may include the following:

  • Watery diarrhea (most common)
  • Loss of appetite
  • Weight loss
  • Stomach cramping or pain
  • Bloating
  • Increased gas
  • Nausea
  • Fatigue

Other less-common symptoms may include:

  • Vomiting
  • Low-grade fever
  • Body aches
  • Headache
  • Flu-like symptoms
