What is the Problem?
U.S. safety officials are seeking a recall for 52 million defective airbag inflators that were used by Maserati and 11 other auto-makers.
These inflators can rupture and explode when the airbag is triggered, ejecting sharp pieces of metal shrapnel into the passenger compartment.
What is the Risk?
Two deaths have been reported in the U.S. and Canada since 2009, as well as 7 serious injuries, when drivers and/or passengers were hit by flying pieces of jagged metal in their face, neck, chest or body.
Maserati Has Not Provided List of Vehicles With ARC Airbags
Maserati has not yet provided a complete list of vehicle makes and models with ARC airbag inflators.
So far, only limited recalls have been issued by other auto-makers who used these airbag inflators. Maserati has not issued any recalls for these airbags yet.
ARC Automotive and Delphi Airbag Manufacturing Dates
ARC Automotive and Delphi Automotive Systems manufactured approximately 52 million airbag inflators between the year 2000 and January 2018.
After January 2018, ARC updated their manufacturing process to reduce the risk of a welding problem that has been linked to airbag ruptures. No ruptures have been reported in inflators manufactured after 2018.
ARC Blames Airbag Ruptures on “Isolated” Manufacturing Problems
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has been investigating ARC / Delphi airbag inflators since 2015. After an 8-year investigation, the agency concluded that the inflators were defective.
The NHTSA asked ARC to issue a voluntary recall in April 2023, but the company refused — blaming the ruptures on “isolated” manufacturing issues.
Welding Problem Linked to ARC Airbag Explosions
The NHTSA believes that a manufacturing problem is to blame. The problem occurs when the airbag inflator’s metal canister is being welded together. This process can leave behind metal debris called “weld slag,” which can plug up an exit hole when the airbag deploys, trapping gases inside the inflator and causing it to blow apart.
