Were you burned by Maruchan® Instant Lunch or a similar instant soup cup? If so, you are not alone — recent studies have found that defective design makes these products extremely dangerous, especially for children. The tall, narrow containers can easily tip over, spill hot and sticky noodles, and cause severe burn injuries, nerve damage, and permanent disfigurement.

What is Maruchan Instant Lunch?
Maruchan Instant Lunch comes in a styrofoam cup filled with dried noodles. Consumers are instructed to boil water in a separate microwaveable container, add water to the styrofoam cup, close the lid, and wait until it cooks. The product is designed to be eaten right out of the cup.
Maruchan products include:
- Maruchan Instant Lunch
- Maruchan Ramen Noodle Soup
- Maruchan Ramen
- Maruchan Bowl
- Maruchan Yakisoba
- And more
What is the problem with Maruchan Instant Lunch?
The problem with Maruchan Instant Lunch is that it has a round base that is narrower at the bottom than the top. Furthermore, the product is taller than it is wide. Unfortunately, taller soup cups are more likely to tip over than short, wide bowls.
According to a study titled “Instant cup of soup: design flaw increase risk of burns,” published in the Journal of Burn Care & Research in 2007:
“Instant soups are packaged in containers that tend to be tall with a narrow base that predisposes them to being knocked over and spilled. Simple redesigning of instant soup packaging with a wider base and shorter height, along with the requirement for warnings about the risks of burns would reduce the frequency of soup burns.”
Instant Soup Burn Injuries
December 2011 — NPR has published a story about the dangers of instant soup cups. According to Dr. Warren Garner, director of the burn unit at University of Southern California’s County Hospital, he sees “at least two to three patients a week who’ve been injured by these products.” He said children are at particular risk:
“These soups are dangerous because of the way the cups are designed. The cups are tall, lightweight, and have an unstable base that makes them tip over easily.”
Why Are Maruchan Soup Burns So Severe?
- Noodles soups are more likely to cause severe burns than liquid soups. This is because noodles stay hot longer than water.
- Children have thinner skin than adults. About 1 in 5 children admitted to emergency rooms with soup burns require surgery, such as a skin graft.
- Many people underestimate the risk. According to plaintiff Latisha Beam, who filed a soup burn lawsuit on behalf of her 3 year-old son: “The average person does not know how bad those noodles can burn a child.”
