Lexapro Overview

Lexapro, a product of Forest Laboratories, was introduced into the U.S. market in 2002 where it was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to treat symptoms of major depressive disorder and anxiety. Lexapro is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI), and works to reduce depressive tendencies by balancing chemicals in the brain.

However, Lexapro has recently been reported to cause serious adverse health effects in newborns. Mothers who take Lexapro while pregnant, may increase the risk of their child developing a severe, life-threatening birth defects.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a warning back in July 2006 that addressed the potential risks associated with taking antidepressants during pregnancy. Lexapro side effects have been linked to an increased risk of congenital birth defects in children born to mothers who took the drug during pregnancy.
