Overview
Levitra contains vardenafil, a prescription medication that treat erectile dysfunction. It is made by Bayer HealthCare and was approved by the FDA in 2002.
How Does Levitra Work?
Levitra has a very similar chemical structure as Viagra. Both drugs work by blocking an enzyme called PDE5. This releases nitric oxide (NO), which relaxes blood vessels and increases blood-flow to the penis.
FDA Evaluating Risk
On June 30, the FDA said it was evaluating a “serious risk” of skin melanoma from all PDE5 inhibitors, including Levitra.
Harvard Study Finds 84% Increased Risk
In 2014, Harvard researchers published a study in JAMA Internal Medicine linking Viagra with an 84% increased risk of melanoma. The conclusions were based on data from 25,000 men.
What is the problem?
Evidence linking erectile dysfunction drugs has been growing for years. The first study linking PDE5 inhibitors and melanoma was published in 2008. Over the next few years, more studies increased evidence of a risk:
- January 2011 — A study found that PDE5 inhibitors made melanoma more invasive.
- August 2012 — A study found that Levitra accelerated the development of melanoma.
What is Melanoma?
Melanoma is the most deadly type of skin cancer. It starts in melanocytes, which are cells that make dark pigment in the skin. About 76,000 Americans are diagnosed with melanoma every year.
Symptoms of Melanoma Skin Cancer
- Asymmetrical shape
- Uneven border
- Multiple colors
- Changes over time
- Diameter is larger than a pencil eraser (1/4-inch)
- And more
