Texas Yaz LawsuitYasmin side effects have been reported by thousands of women who have used this birth control pill to prevent pregnancy. Yasmin contains a new ingredient called drospirenone, which is associated with a 75% increased risk of blood clots. At least 50 women have died after using contraceptives containing drospirenone. Blood clots are a life-threatening Yasmin side effect — they can cause pulmonary embolism, heart attack, stroke, organ damage, lifelong disability, and death.

Overview

Yasmin is a new type of birth control pill. It was invented by Berlex Laboratories, which later became Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals Inc. Yasmin is approved to prevent pregnancy, reduce mild acne, and treat Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD).

Yasmin is a once-daily regimen. The following hormones are included in each active Yasmin birth control pill:

  • 3-mg drospirenone, which is a “fourth generation” synthetic progestin that prevents pregnancy by inhibiting ovulation (when the ovaries release an egg)
  • 0.03-mg ethinyl estradiol, which is a type of synthetic estrogen with a long history of use

Yasmin FDA Warnings

The FDA has issued numerous safety warnings regarding Yasmin side effects and misleading advertisements that fail to communicate this risk information. Multiple studies have linked drospirenone to an increased risk of blood clots, which prompted the FDA to fund its own massive study that involved more than 800,000 women. In September of 2011, the FDA announced a public safety warning, which announced that women taking drospirenone birth control were 75% more likely to develop a blood clot. Though the risk of side effects is higher, drospirenone is no more effective at preventing pregnancy.

Blood clots are a serious Yasmin side effect, because they can cause death. However, when most women decided to switch from older birth control pills to Yasmin, they may not have been fully aware of this risk. The FDA sent Bayer a warning letter for “failing to communicate any risk information” in its advertisements for birth control pills. The FDA called the ads “misleading,” and sent Bayer three warning letters:

Bayer later ran a corrective advertising campaign, but by that time, thousands of women had switched to Bayer’s birth control pill and suffered severe Yasmin side effects.

Yasmin and Blood Clots

The problem with blood clots is that they are often a silent killer. They do not always show symptoms when they develop. One Yasmin side effect is deep vein thrombosis, in which blood clots form deep inside the body. DVT only shows symptoms in about 50% of cases. However, these blood clots can easily break free and become trapped in a major internal organ (commonly the heart, brain, or lungs). This can cause heart attack, ischemic stroke, or pulmonary embolism.

You are probably already aware that these severe Yasmin side effects can cause irreversible organ damage and/or lifelong disability. In the most serious cases, Yasmin can cause death.
