8.2 Million Bags of Laundry Pods Recalled for Safety Hazard

In April 2024, Proctor & Gamble recalled 8.2 million defective bags of Tide Pods, Gain Flings, and other highly-concentrated laundry detergent pods that pose a life-threatening safety hazard if they are swallowed:

“The outer packaging meant to prevent access to the contents can split open near the zipper track, posing a risk of serious injury to children and other vulnerable populations if the contents of the laundry detergent packets are ingested, as well as posing a risk of skin or eye injuries.”

Why Were These Laundry Pods Recalled?

Proctor & Gamble recalled 8.2 million bags of Tide Pods, Gain Flings, Ace Pods and Ariel Pods that were made between September 2023 and February 2024 because the zipper-sealed plastic bag can break.

What is the Problem?

These defective plastic bags can split open near the zipper track, making them impossible to close. This poses a safety hazard because children and other vulnerable individuals are more likely to get into the bag and swallow a laundry detergent pod, which could be deadly.

How Serious Is The Safety Risk?

Swallowing a Tide Pod or other laundry detergent pod can be life-threatening or deadly because the chemicals are so highly-concentrated. If the pod is broken and the chemicals leak out, there is also a serious risk of skin or eye injuries from touching the chemicals.

There is also a possible risk of death, according to the recall: “Ingestion of a large quantity of any surfactant-containing household cleaning products can cause death among individuals with underlying health issues.”

How Many Injuries Were Reported?

Proctor & Gamble reported 4 incidents where children in the U.S. were able to access liquid laundry pods, including 3 children who ingested the laundry detergent.

These incidents were reported during the time-frame in which the defective bags were being sold, but it is unknown if these incidents actually occurred because the bag was broken, according to P&G.

Check If Your Laundry Pods Were Recalled

Proctor & Gamble created a recall website where customers can check the lot code on the bottom of the bag: http://www.pg.com/bags.

These recalled bags of laundry pods were sold nationwide at Big Lots, CVS, Family Dollar, Home Depot, Sam’s Club, Target, Walmart, other major stores, online at Amazon.com and other websites.
