La Jiao Shou Shen Recall
June 11, 2014 — The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has published a Safety Alert to warn that consumers should not buy or use La Jiao Shou Shen, a dietary supplement that is promoted for weight-loss.
Laboratory tests have discovered hidden ingredients in La Jiao Shou Shen that are not listed on the label. These ingredients include dangerous prescription medications, including phenolphthalein and sibutramine.
Heart Attack Linked to La Jiao Shou Shen
In 2012, the International Journal of Emerging Medicine published a case report of a 25 year-old male who developed severe chest pain and suffered a massive heart attack after using cayenne pepper pills, originally called La Jiao Shou Shen, for only five days. Sibutramine, an ingredient in La Jiao Shou Shen, is associated with heart problems.
What is Phenolpthalein?
Phenolphthalein was the main component of many over-the-counter laxatives, including Ex-Lax and Feen-A-Mint, for most of the 20th century. Safety concerns arose in 1997, after a two-year study in rodents found higher rates of cancer. Today, phenolphthalein is not an active ingredient in any approved drug in the United States.
What is Subutramine?
La Jiao Shou Shen contains sibutramine, an appetite-suppressing drug that was originally sold as a prescription mediation called Meridia. It was pulled off the market in October 2010 for safety reasons. According to the FDA:
“Sibutramine is known to substantially increase blood pressure and/or pulse rate in some patients and may present a significant risk for patients with a history of coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, arrhythmias, or stroke. This product may also interact, in life-threatening ways, with other medications a consumer may be taking.”
