Greenworks Recalls Kobalt Yard Tools Over Battery Fire Risk
In July 2026, Greenworks Tools issued a recall for roughly 554,780 Kobalt 24V and 48V yard power tools that use lithium-ion batteries with a USB-C charging port.
The recall involves a wide variety of outdoor yard tools that were sold under the Kobal® brand-name. The lineup includes covering trimmers, blowers, mowers, chainsaws and pruning saws. Only the tools and batteries fitted with a USB-C charging port are affected by the problem.
What Is the Danger With These Kobalt Batteries?
The problem has been linked to the USB-C charging port. According to the CPSC, charging the lithium-ion batteries through that port while they are still inserted in the yard power tool can make the batteries short-circuit. This is what creates the fire hazard.
How Many Battery Fires Have Been Reported Nationwide?
Greenworks has received 34 reports nationwide of the batteries producing smoke, sparking or catching fire while inserted in the tool and charging through the USB-C port. No injuries or property damage have been reported so far.
Which Kobalt Products Are Affected?
The recall covers Kobalt 24V and 48V (2x24V) tools sold with USB-C batteries in 3.0Ah, 4.0Ah, 5.0Ah, 6.0Ah and 8.0Ah sizes. Affected items include:
- 24V trimmer and 270 CFM blower combo kit (KOC 1024-06)
- 48V 17″ and 21″ push and self-propelled mowers (KM 4224A-06, KM 5224A-06, KMS 6224A-06, KMSD 8224A-06)
- 48V 14″ chainsaw kit and chainsaw (KCS 4224-06, KCS 1448-06)
- 24V and 48V blowers (KHB 324-06, KHB 4248-06, KHB 6048-06)
- Stand-alone 3.0Ah and 6.0Ah batteries and 2-packs (KB 324-06, KB 624-06, KB 324D-06, KB 624D-06)
Where Were the Recalled Tools Sold?
The recalled Kobalt tools were sold at Lowe’s stores nationwide from January 2026 through May 2026 for between $20 and $482. With Lowe’s locations throughout Texas, it is possible that these tools reached a large number of Texas households.
Owners should stop charging the batteries using the USB-C port while they are in the tool. Then contact Greenworks for a free replacement battery. Owners can register on the company’s Kobalt product recall page or call (888) 266-7096.
