What is the problem?

A study in Botswana found that HIV-positive women who used dolutegravir before they got pregnant, or in the first 3 months of pregnancy, were more likely to have a baby with a birth defect.

Dolutegravir is an ingredient in Triumeq, Tivicay, and Juluca.

Juluca Birth Defects

Juluca is associated with neural tube birth defects, which occur when the spinal column does not seal in the first month of pregnancy. It can cause paralysis, brain defects, spinal defects, or death.

What is Juluca?

Juluca® is once-daily pill that combines two different anti-HIV medications, dolutegravir and rilpivirine. Juluca prevents the HIV virus from multiplying, which helps reduce HIV in the body.

FDA Warning for Juluca Birth Defects

In May 2018, the FDA published a Safety Communication warning about the risk of neural tube birth defects when pregnant women use Juluca.

Due to this risk, the FDA recommended that women of childbearing age and pregnant women should switch to a different HIV medication.

“Neural tube defects happen early in pregnancy, before many women even know they are pregnant. For this reason, women of childbearing age should talk to their health care professional about other non-dolutegravir-containing antiretroviral medicines.”

What is a Neural Tube Birth Defect?

Neural tube birth defects occur when the spinal column fails to close, which allows amniotic fluid in the womb to damage the spinal cord and brain.

Spina Bifida

The most common neural tube birth defect is spina bifida. Babies with spina bifida usually suffer from nerve damage in their spinal cord that causes paralysis of their legs, as well as other serious disabilities.

Brain & Spinal Cord Birth Defects

  • Spina bifida
  • Meningocele
  • Myelomeningocele
  • Anencephaly
  • Encephalocele
  • Iniencephaly
