What is Shower-to-Shower?

Johnson & Johnson manufactures Shower-to-Shower, a feminine hygiene product that is marketed with the slogan, “Just a sprinkle a day helps keep odor away.” The powder contains mostly cornstarch and talc, with some other minerals and fragrance. The absorbent formula helps keep users dry. Talcum is also used in baby powder.

Shower-to-Shower and Ovarian Cancer

Shower to Shower contains talcum, a powdered mineral that contains the carcinogen asbestos in its natural state. Since 1973, consumer products containing talc have been asbestos-free. However, there is growing evidence that asbestos-free talcum powder can cause ovarian cancer. Tissue samples taken from women with ovarian cancer have detected particles of talc. This suggests that it is possible for talcum to travel through the vagina, uterus, fallopian tubes, and into the ovaries when it is applied to the genital area.

J&J Loses Shower-to-Shower Lawsuit in South Dakota

In October 2013, a  federal jury in Sioux Falls, South Dakota has found that Johnson & Johnson failed to warn that Shower-to-Shower could lead to the development of ovarian cancer. The plaintiff, Deane Berg, used Shower to Shower for 30 years. She was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 2006. When doctors analyzed tissue from her ovaries, they found talc and concluded that body powder was responsible. The jury did not award damages because they found that Shower-to-Shower was not defective without warnings about ovarian cancer.

What is Ovarian Cancer?

Ovarian cancer is a relatively rare but deadly form of cancer. The American Cancer Society estimates that about 22,000 new cases are diagnosed every year and over 14,000 women will die of ovarian cancer in the United States. The problem is that it rarely produces symptoms in its early stages, which can delay diagnosis until the cancer spreads to the abdomen or pelvis. Once this occurs, ovarian cancer is much more difficult to treat.

Symptoms of Ovarian Cancer

  • Vaginal bleeding
  • Abnormal vaginal discharge
  • Frequent bloating
  • Pain in the belly or pelvis
  • Abdominal pressure, fullness, swelling
  • Changes in bowel or bladder habits (constipation, frequent urination, etc.)
  • Persistent fatigue
  • Low back pain
  • Loss of appetite or feeling full
