Overview

Jeni’s Splendid is a boutique ice cream company that started in Ohio and now operates 21 “scoop shops” nationwide. Products are also widely distributed in markets, including Whole Foods grocery stores.

Jeni’s Splendid Ice Cream Recall

On April 2, 2015, several samples of ice cream were collected from a Whole Foods grocery store in Lincoln, Nebraska, by the Nebraska Department of Agriculture. Those samples included a pint each of Jeni’s Brown Butter Almond Brittle and Dark Chocolate ice cream.

On April 15, one sample of Jeni’s ice cream tested positive for Listeria and the FDA was notified. The next day, health inspectors sent a second sample to an FDA lab in Denver for further testing.

On April 21, the second sample of Jeni’s Dark Chocolate ice cream tested positive for Listeria. Two days later, Jeni’s recalled all of their products.

On April 23, a recall was issued for all ice cream, frozen yogurt, sorbet, and ice cream sandwiches.

Jeni’s announced that the source of contamination was traced to a facility in Harrison West, Ohio, which has been shut down while the company works to sterilize the facility. According to a statement on the company’s website:

“We have decided to recall everything currently on retailer shelves, and we are closing our scoop shops until we are 100% confident every item we sell is safe. We have called in experts to help us find the root cause. We will be working with our suppliers to determine if the bacteria was introduced by one of the ingredients we use. We will not reopen the kitchen until we can ensure the safety of our customers.”

Listeria Food Poisoning

Listeria monocytogenes is a bacteria that is commonly found in soil and water. It can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections, especially in young children, older adults, and people with weak immune systems. Pregnant women can also suffer a miscarriage or stillbirth.

Symptoms of listeriosis appear 3-70 days after eating contaminated food, and can last for weeks. The most severe infections spread beyond the gastrointestinal system to the nervous system, leading to meningitis to even encephalitis.

Healthy adults may experience symptoms like:

  • High fever
  • Headache
  • Stiff neck
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Abdominal pain and cramping
  • Diarrhea
