What is the problem?
One recent incident involved a family from Mason, Ohio. The mother, Holly Burns, said an IKEA Glasholm glass desk “exploded” in her teenage son’s bedroom when no one was around:
“I was cooking dinner, when I heard a big sound like a big boom, and my first thought was a tree had fallen into the house, that’s how loud it was.”
IKEA Glass Table Explosions
There have been over a dozen complaints about IKEA glass tables and desks shattering spontaneously, according to reports filed with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC).
In many cases, the victims have posted YouTube videos of the aftermath. There have also been reports internationally — for example, a 25 year-old woman in the U.K. said she heard a “massive bang…like a gunshot” when her IKEA Salmi glass table exploded when her dog and child were nearby.
IKEA Responds to Glass Explosion Complaints
IKEA insists that their glass-top tables and desks “tested rigorously to meet the highest standards,” but the company admitted that tempered glass can potentially pose safety hazards:
“Over time, small knocks and fractures can affect the durability of tempered glass. We understand the experience of the glass breaking can be distressing. However tempered glass is designed to shatter to minimize risk of injury.”
Tempered Glass vs. Plate Glass
Traditional “plate glass” shatters into just a few large pieces of razor-sharp glass. In comparison, tempered glass is designed to be safer because it shatters into thousands of tiny pieces of glass with rounded edges, often attached to one another. This reduces the risk of injury.
What Causes Spontaneous Glass Explosions
- Damage, nicks, or chips that grow into larger breaks
- Glass bending in the frame, causing stress to develop as the glass expands and contracts due to temperature or wind deflection
- Internal manufacturing defects in the glass (nickel sulfide inclusions)
- Excessive hot or cold temperatures, or sudden thermal changes
- Glass is not thick enough to withstand wind or weight on the glass
