What is Hydroxycut SX-7?

Hydroxycut SX-7 is a weight-loss supplement manufactured by MuscleTech and Iovate Health Sciences, Inc.

It is one of the newest formulations of Hydroxycut, a diet pill that hit the market over a decade ago. Hydroxycut was the most popular diet pill that contained ephedra, a stimulant that was banned in 2004 over cardiovascular concerns. Hydroxycut SX-7 is marketed as “non-stimulant” and its primary ingredient is an extract of the green coffee bean.

Hydroxycut Recall

In May 2009, Iovate recalled 14 different formulations of Hydroxycut after receiving 23 reports of serious liver injuries, including jaundice, elevated liver enzymes, and liver toxicity. One person died from liver failure and another needed a liver transplant.

The FDA warned:

“Liver injury, although rare, was reported by patients at the doses of Hydroxycut recommended on the bottle. … FDA urges consumers to stop using Hydroxycut products in order to avoid any undue risk.”

Other potential health problems included seizures, cardiovascular problems, rhabdomyolysis (muscle damage), and kidney failure.

What is the problem?

Despite dozens of re-formulations and recalls, Hydroxycut continues to be associated with reports of liver damage and other side effects.

In 2012, the manufacturers agreed to pay $25 million to settle several class action lawsuits accusing them of falsely marketing Hydroxycut as safe and effective. However, this settlement was reduced to $14 million in January 2014.

Liver Toxicity

In January 2014, a case report was published by doctors who treated a 27 year-old man who used Hydroxycut for two weeks and developed liver toxicity.

When he was hospitalized, he had significantly elevated liver enzyme levels, jaundice, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, fever, chills, and hepatitis (liver inflammation). Liver biopsy showed signs of acute liver failure.

The product he was taking contained several ingredients known to be associated with hepatotoxicity, including green tea extracts (Camellia Sinensis), Garcinia Cambogia, and chromium.
