Texas Health Officials Report Rise in Cyclospora Infections

July 17, 2023 — Health officials in Texas are warning about a rise in Cyclospora infections in the Houston area.

Public health officials in Houston, Harris County, and Fort Bend urged peopled to use caution when eating or preparing fruits and vegetables.

All fruits and vegetables should be washed before eating, cutting, or cooking, health officials recommended.

Cyclospora can also spread on surfaces that have come in contact with raw fruits and vegetables, such as cutting boards and utensils like knives.

Between April and July 2023, there have been at least 581 infections with Cyclospora reported nationwide, including 55 people who were hospitalized due to a severe infection, according to the CDC update on July 13, 2023.

The symptoms of an infection usually begin about 2 weeks after eating food that is contaminated with the Cyclospora parasite.

The most common symptom is watery diarrhea, which may be frequent and explosive. Left untreated, the symptoms can persist for several weeks or months, go away and return, and cause malnutrition or long-term intestinal damage.
