UPDATE: Fresh Location Protein Snack Tray & Trail Mix Recalled for Listeria Risk
January 7, 2020 — Fresh Location has recalled Protein Snack Trays and Protein Trail Mix because they contain hard-boiled eggs that were recalled by Almark Foods due to a risk of Listeria.
The snacks may have been delivered to convenience stores, micro markets, hospitals, hotels and vending machines in the following states: Illinois, Missouri, Tennessee, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Kentucky, Virginia, Indiana, and Mississippi.
Hard-Boiled Eggs Linked to Deadly Listeria Outbreak in Texas
In December 2019, the CDC issued a warning after bulk, fresh, peeled hard-boiled eggs from Almark Foods were linked to a deadly outbreak of Listeria illnesses in 5 states, including Texas.
How Many People Are Sick?
The CDC reported 7 illnesses in 5 states: Texas (2), South Carolina (2), Pennsylvania (1), Maine (1), and Florida (1). One death was reported in Texas. Four of the victims have been hospitalized.
Hard-Boiled Egg Recall
On December 23, 2019, Almark Food expanded a recall to include all products from its facility in Gainesville, Georgia due to a risk of Listeria contamination.
The products were sold directly to consumers in major grocery stores in more than 80 different types of foods. The eggs were also sold in bulk to food-service and restaurants.
The bulk eggs were sold in plastic pails of various sizes to restaurants, food processors, and food-service operations for use in salads, deviled eggs, and egg salad. The eggs have a 49-day shelf-life.
What Eggs Were Recalled?
The recall involves dozens of products made with hard-boiled eggs. A partial list of recalled products can be found on the FDA website.
The products were sold under brand-names such as 7 Select, Almark Foods, Best Choice, CMI, Dairy Fresh, Diebergs Market, Deb-El, Egggs Select, Egglands Best, Everyday Essentials, Farmers Hen House, Food Club, Fresh Thyme, Giant Eagle, Great American Deli, Great Day, Inspired Organics, Kirkland Signautre, Kroger, LIDL, Lucerne, Members Mark, Naturally Better, Nellie’s, Nic’s, O Organics, Peckish, Pete & Gerry’s, Rainbow Farms, Rembrandt Foods, ShopRite, Simple Truth Organics, Sunshine, Sutherland’s Food Service, Trader Joe’s, Vital Farms, Wild Harvest, and more.

Bacon & Egg Cheesewich Recall
On January 2, 2020, the USDA warned that the following product contains hard-boiled eggs that were recalled due to Listeria:
- 3.6-oz. plastic packages containing “CHEESEWICH Ready to Eat BACON N EGGS” with “USE BY” dates 12/27/19, 1/3/20, 1/23/20, 1/30/20, 2/6/20, 2/14/20, 2/19/20 and 2/28/20 and lot codes 281191, 302191, 309191, 316191, 323191, 331191, 336191, 344191.
The products contain separately packaged bacon and hard-boiled eggs. Packages bear establishment number “P-45031” inside the USDA mark of inspection.
MiniMeal2Go Recalled at Meijer for Listeria Risk
On December 31, 2019, FiveStar Gourmet Foods recalled two snack foods sold at Meijer supermarkets in Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Ohio, Michigan and Wisconsin because they contain hard-boiled eggs from Almark Foods. The recall involves:
- MiniMeal2Go® Protein Pack (8.25oz)
- MiniMeal2Go® Avocado Toast (6.75oz.).
Listeria Food Poisoning Infections
Infections with Listeria monocytogenes are significantly more likely to cause death or other severe complications in pregnant women, people on dialysis, people with cancer, and adults over 65.
The symptoms of a Listeria illness usually begin within 1 to 4 weeks, but they can take up to 70 days, or appear on the same day. The most common symptoms include a headache, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance, convulsions, fever and muscle aches.
