Hair Relaxer Uterine Cancer Lawsuits

One of the first hair relaxer lawsuits was filed in October 2022 by a woman from Missouri who developed uterine cancer and had to have a hysterectomy when she was only 28 years old.

The lawsuit was filed against L’Oreal, Soft Sheen / Carson, and several other beauty companies who have been selling hair relaxers for years without warning women about the life-threatening risks of using toxic chemicals to straighten their hair.

What is the problem?

Women who use hair relaxers at least every 4 months were twice as likely to be diagnosed with uterine cancer by the age of 70, according to a major study published in October 2022.

What is the Risk?

The researchers estimated that about 4% of women who used hair relaxers every 4 months would develop uterine cancer, which was over twice the 1.6% risk of women who did not use hair relaxers.

The study was based on data from nearly 34,000 women who participated in the Sister Study. It was published in the Journal of the National Cancer Institute in October 2022. The researchers warned:

“Hair products may contain hazardous chemicals with endocrine-disrupting and carcinogenic properties. Previous studies have found hair product use to be associated with a higher risk of hormone-sensitive cancers including breast and ovarian cancer.”

Why Are Hair Relaxers So Risky?

Hair relaxers are heavily advertised toward African American women. The most popular hair relaxers are kits that women do themselves at home, similar to hair dye kits, where a chemical lotion is applied to the hair and washed out after a period of time.

During the hair relaxing treatment, it is impossible to avoid getting the chemicals on the skin — and they burn. The treatment commonly causes skin irritation, sores, abrasions, and painful burns, which allow the chemicals to get into the body.

Endocrine-Disrupting Chemicals in Hair Relaxers

The problem is that hair relaxers commonly contain toxic chemicals like parabens, phthalates, formaldehyde, and more. Some of these chemicals are known to be carcinogenic (cancer-causing) or endocrine-disrupting, which means that they can mimic hormones like estrogen.

Hair Relaxers Linked to Hormone-Sensitive Health Problems

In recent years, a growing number of studies have found a link between hair relaxers and hormone-sensitive health problems, such as:

What is Uterine Cancer?

Uterine cancer starts when cells divide and grow uncontrollably inside the uterus (or “womb”), which is a hollow female reproductive organ in the pelvis. Left untreated, uterine cancer can spread to nearby tissues in the pelvis, or other parts of the body.

What is Endometrial Cancer?

The most common type of uterine cancer is endometrial cancer, which occurs when cells in the inner lining of the uterus (called the “endometrium”) grow into a mass of tissue called a tumor. About 50,000 women in the U.S. are diagnosed with endometrial cancer every year.
