Costco Green Tea Fat Burner
Costco is one of the largest retailers of the weight-loss supplement Green Tea Fat Burner. It is a “maximum strength” product with 400-mg of EGCG, an ingredient that is linked to liver damage. The product contains 200 Fast-Acting Liquid Soft-Gels for maximum effect.
Liver Damage From Supplements Is on the Rise
A new study published in the journal Hepatology has found that weight-loss supplements containing green-tea extract pills pose a serious risk of liver damage. The researchers found that green tea extract products contributed to liver damage in 24 of the 130 cases linked to dietary supplements. Other studies suggest that up to 10% of people who suffer acute liver failure from green tea extract may die as a result, according to the researchers.
$2.65 Million Settlement in Green Tea Fat Burner Lawsuit
February 1, 2011 — Irwin Naturals, Inc. has agreed to pay $2.65 million to settle a lawsuit in California. The company is accused of violating state law because Green Tea Fat Burner contains 14-times more than the legal limit of 1-microgram of lead, but lacks warning labels.
According to the lawsuit, Irwin Naturals is accused of:
“…engaging in false and misleading advertising of certain dietary supplement products in violation of Proposition 65, which requires a warning label on products that expose the consumer to over half a microgram of lead per day.”
Irwin Naturals has stopped selling and/or reformulated all products since being alerted to the laboratory test results. They will be required to include warning information about lead levels when marketing their products in California
Green Tea Fat Burner and Liver Damage
The ingredient label on Green Tea Fat Burner includes green tea extract. The extract, also known as epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), is an abundant catechin found in tea. According to the label, Green Tea Fat Burner contains 400-mg of green tea extract, which is 50% EGCG.
In normal doses, EGCG is an antioxidant with health benefits. However, studies have found that higher doses of EGCG in dietary supplements can have pro-oxidant effects, including liver toxicity. One study published in 2009 described 34 cases of hepatitis (liver inflammation) and one death in people who were using supplements containing EGCG. Another study linked SlimQuick (containing 135-mg of EGCG) to a case of severe liver toxicity.
