Gold Bond Lawsuit

A lawsuit (PDF) was filed in New Jersey on behalf of Janice Chakalos, a woman who died of ovarian cancer in 2012 at the age of 63. Her husband claims her death from ovarian cancer was caused by Gold Bond Body Powder and Johnson’s & Johnson’s talcum powder.

The lawsuit was filed against the manufacturer of Gold Bond, Chattem, Inc., which was acquired by Sanofi in 2010. Other defendants include Johnson & Johnson and Imerys Talc America.

The lawsuit was filed on November 5, 2014 in the Superior Court of New Jersey (Somerset County) — In RE: James Chakalos vs. Johnson & Johnson, et al.Case No. 3:14-cv-07079.

The Talcum Powder Controversy

Talc is very similar to asbestos and they are often found together in the same mineral deposits underground. Asbestos was banned from cosmetic products in the U.S. in 1976. Before then, many talcum powder products were contaminated with asbestos.

Talc and Mesothelioma

Breathing asbestos can cause a rare type of lung cancer called mesothelioma. This cancer starts in cells on the outside of the lungs — much like ovarian cancers that start in cells covering the ovaries.

Talc an Ovarian Cancer

Thousands of lawsuits have been filed by women who used talcum powder on their genital area and eventually developed ovarian cancer. These women say manufacturers failed to warn that talc can travel through their reproductive system and increase their risk of cancer.

Symptoms of Ovarian Cancer

  • Pain in the abdomen or pelvis
  • Bloating
  • Change in bowel habits
  • Fluid in the abdomen
  • Indigestion
  • Nausea
  • Lump in the abdomen
  • Fatigue
  • Loss of appetite
