Texas Glyxambi LawyerDiabetes is a risk-factor for kidney problems. Because Glyxambi relies on the kidneys, it may also increase these risks. The FDA has issued warnings about kidney failure from diabetes drugs, but recent lawsuits accuse drug-makers of downplaying these risks.

What is Kidney Failure?

Healthy kidneys clean the blood by removing extra water and toxins in urine. When the kidneys function at 15% or less, this is called kidney failure. Kidney failure causes harmful wastes to build up in the body, high blood pressure, water retention, and low red blood cell counts. The only treatments are dialysis or a kidney transplant.

Glyxambi and Kidney Failure

People with diabetes often develop nephropathy, a disease that occurs when the kidneys are progressively damaged after many years of filtering blood that contains too much sugar. Glyxambi treats type-2 diabetes by forcing the kidneys to remove even more sugar from the body in urine. Because Glyxambi relies so heavily on the kidneys, some experts are concerned that Glyxambi could lead to kidney problems.

What Does the Manufacturer Recommend?

The Prescribing Information (PDF) for Glyxambi warns that the risk of kidney problems increases for elderly patients and those with pre-existing renal impairment. Kidney function should be tested before starting Glyxambi and periodically thereafter.

Dehydration and Kidney Failure

Because Glyxambi is a diuretic, one of the most common side effects is dehydration. Patients who have kidney problems (especially those over 65) are more likely to become dehydrated. Not enough fluid in the body can harm the kidneys by decreasing blood-volume and bloody pressure.

Infections and Kidney Failure

In clinical trials, at least 12% of Glyxambi patients developed urinary tract infections. In December 2015, the FDA warned about the risk of urinary infections spreading to the kidneys and causing kidney failure. Kidney infections can also scar the kidneys and lead to chronic kidney failure. Bloodstream infections (sepsis) can also cause a sudden drop in blood pressure that cuts off blood-flow to the kidneys and causes acute kidney failure.

Symptoms of Kidney Disease

  • Fatigue
  • Generally feeling sick all the time (malaise)
  • Loss of appetite
  • Headache
  • Itchy or dry skin
  • Nausea or vomiting
  • Swelling of the arms and legs (edema)
  • Confusion
  • Trouble sleeping
  • And more
