What Happened?
No infections were reported, but the recalled Gerber baby formula may be contaminated with dangerous Cronobacter sakazakii bacteria. This is the same strain of bacteria that caused a deadly outbreak of infections from Similac baby formula in 2022.
What is the Risk?
Cronobacter sakazakii is found commonly in the environment and usually poses little risk to healthy adults, but infections can be deadly for young infants.
The risk is highest for premature babies, infants under 2 months old, and infants with vulnerable immune systems due to underlying medical issues.
Babies who are infected with Cronobacter can develop severe, life-threatening complications, such as:
- Meningitis (inflammation of the lining around the brain and spinal cord)
- Sepsis (blood infection)
- Intestinal infection called Necrotizing Enterocolitis (NEC)
- Gastrointestinal problems
- Permanent health problems
- Death
What Should I Do?
Babies who were fed these recalled batches of formula should get emergency medical attention if they develop symptoms of a Cronobacter infection, such as:
- Poor feeding
- Excessive crying
- Irritability
- Very low energy
- Temperature changes
- Seizures
