Generic Yaz and Drospirenone

Yaz and generic Yaz all contain one controversial ingredient: drospirenone, a newly-developed, synthetic type of the female hormone progestin. Since drospirenone was first used in Yasmin birth control in 2001, evidence has been growing that this ingredient has a slightly higher risk of blood clots compared to other types of synthetic progestins. In 2011, a massive FDA-funded study found that women taking drospirenone-containing birth control pills were 75% more likely to have a blood clot. They were also more likely to have a heart attack or stroke.

In response, the FDA recently announced that it would be updating the drug safety information on all drospirenone-containing birth control pills, because “The FDA has concluded that drospirenone-containing birth control pills may be associated with a higher risk for blood clots than other progestin-containing pills.”

The following is a list of birth control pills that contain drospirenone:

Generic Yaz Blood Clots

Women who take generic Yaz may have a higher risk of blood clots. Although blood clots might sound like a minor side effect, they can actually be extremely dangerous. One side effect of generic Yaz is Deep Vein Thrombosis, in which blood clots form inside veins deep within the body. Unlike surface blood clots, which the body filters out before they reach the bloodstream, DVT blood clots can break loose, float in the bloodstream, and travel until they get stuck in a major internal organ.

Blood clots that become embolisms can stop the supply of blood to major internal organs. This can cause organ tissue to die, which is permanent and life-threatening. It is most common for blood clots to get trapped in the lungs, causing a pulmonary embolism. However, they can also get stuck in the heart or brain, causing a heart attack or ischemic stroke. Blood clots can cause organ failure, organ damage, disability, and death.
