Company Recalls All 4-oz. Cans of Geisha® Medium Shrimp

On April 21, 2023, Kawasho Foods expanded the recall to include ALL 4-oz. cans of Geisha® Medium Shrimp because they may be under-processed, which could lead to contamination with Clostridium botulinum, the bacteria that causes botulism.

What Happened?

In the original recall, Kawasho Foods said there were reports of “swelling, leaking, or bursting cans.” The products may not have been processed adequately to kill bacteria and other microorganisms that cause severe food poisoning, such as botulism.

Were Any Illnesses Reported?

No illnesses were reported in either recall, but the company expanded the recall after “receiving additional information from the FDA.”

In the recall, Kawasho Foods warned that “consumers should not use this product, even if it does not look or smell spoiled. … There is a possibility that the product has been under processed, which could lead to the potential for spoilage organisms or pathogens.”

Where Was Geisha Shrimp Sold?

The recall involves 4-oz. cans of Geisha® Medium Shrimp that were sold in Texas and many other states nationwide from December 2022 through April 2023. The product is packaged in 4-oz. metal cans with UPC 071140003909. All lots of this product are being recalled.

The product was distributed to retailers like Walmart, Associated Food Stores, Stater Bros Markets, Safeway, Albertsons, and other stores.

What is Botulism?

Botulism is a type of food poisoning that is caused by eating food that is contaminated with Clostridium botulinum, a bacteria that produces a powerful nerve toxin.

Food that is contaminated with the botulism toxin may not look, smell, or taste spoiled, but taking just a tiny sip can rapidly cause paralysis, an inability to breathe, and death. Paralysis from botulism can be deadly within just 18 to 36 hours, according to the CDC.
