Frozen Fruit Recalled from HEB, Costco, Walmart
In June 2023, Willamette Valley Fruit Co. recalled a variety of frozen strawberries and fruit blends that were sold at HEB, Costco, and Walmart stores throughout Texas.
What is the Problem?
All of the recalled products contain frozen strawberries that were grown in Mexico and potentially contaminated with Hepatitis A, which is a virus that causes a contagious liver disease.
Walmart Recalls Great Value® Frozen Fruit
Walmart recalled Great Value® Sliced Strawberries, Great Value® Mixed Fruit, and Great Value® Antioxidant Blend products that were distributed from January 24, 2023 through June 8, 2023.
These products were sold at Walmart stores in Texas and many other states, including: AR, AZ, CA, CO, HI, IA, ID, IL, IN, KS, KY, LA, MD, MI, MN, MO, MT, ND, NE, NV, NY, OH, OK, OR, PA, SD, TX, UT, VA, WI, WV, and WY.
Costco Recalls Rader Farms Organic Fresh Start Smoothie Blend
Costco Wholesale Stores in Texas recalled Rader Farms® Organic Fresh Start Smoothie Blend products that were distributed from October 3, 2022 through June 8, 2023.
These products were sold at Costco stores in Colorado, Texas, California, and Arizona in 48-oz. (1.36-kg) plastic bags containing six 8-oz. plastic pouches.
HEB Recalls Rader Farms Organic Berry Trio
HEB stores in Texas recalled Rader Farms® Organic Berry Trio products that were distributed between July 18, 2022 through June 8, 2023. The product was packaged in a 3-lb. (1.36-kg) plastic bag.
What is the Risk?
Infections with Hepatitis A cause a liver disease, which may be a mild illness lasting a few weeks, or a severe illness that lasts for several months and progresses to liver failure.
What Should I Do?
Anyone who ate these recalled products should be vigilant for symptoms of Hepatitis A, which may occur within 15 to 50 days of eating contaminated food. The symptoms may include:
- Fever
- Loss of appetite
- Nausea and vomiting
- Fatigue
- Abdominal pain
- Jaundice
- Abnormal liver tests
- Dark urine
- Pale stool
Did Anyone Get Sick?
No illnesses have been linked to the frozen fruit products that were recalled by Willamette Valley Fruit Co., but frozen strawberries from Mexico were linked to an outbreak of Hepatitis A in March 2023. Fresh organic strawberries from Mexico were also linked to another outbreak of Hepatitis A in 2022.
In response to the outbreak in March 2023, multiple recalls were issued for products that were sold at major stores including Costco, Meijer, Trader Joe’s, and other stores.
The recalled products include Organic Daybreak Blend from Costco and a variety of other frozen fruit products that were sold by California Splendor, Scenic Fruit Company and Meijer.
