What is the FreeStyle Libre 3?
Abbott Diabetes Care manufactures the FreeStyle Libre 3 Sensor, which is a medical device that is paired with an app to provide a continuous stream of glucose readings directly to a smartphone.
The sensor device is a small white disc that is applied to the back of the patient’s upper arm, where it takes continuous glucose readings and sends this information to the FreeStyle Libre 3 app.
Inaccurate Readings May Pose Life-Threatening Risks
Abbott Diabetes Care has issued multiple warnings about inaccurate readings from FreeStyle Libre 3 Sensors — including readings that are too high or low.
This could become life-threatening if the patient continues to make the wrong treatment decision to manage blood-sugar levels based on inaccurate low or high readings.
What is the Risk?
In November 2025, Abbott Diabetes Care issued a press release to warn patients and doctors about a risk of inaccurate low readings from FreeStyle Libre 3 Sensors.
This may result in a person with diabetes making the wrong treatment decisions to manage their blood-sugar levels, which could result in a serious injury, hospitalization, or death. According to the warning:
“If undetected, incorrect low glucose readings over an extended period may lead to wrong treatment decisions for people living with diabetes, such as excessive carbohydrate intake or skipping or delaying insulin doses.”
What Should I Do?
Patients who are currently wearing or have a FreeStyle Libre 3 Sensor should immediately verify if it is affected by the problem by visiting the website Abbott has established, and entering the serial number.
You can visit https://www.freestylecheck.com/ to check if your sensor may produce inaccurate low readings.
Abbott also previously warned patients about inaccurate high glucose readings. Patients can check if their FreeStyle Libre 3 Sensor is affected by visiting https://www.freestyleconfirm.com/.
After contacting Abbott and confirming that your sensor is affected, you can immediately stop using and dispose of the sensor. Patients should rely on blood glucose meters until Abbott sends a replacement.
When To Contact a Doctor
Patients should contact a health care provider immediately if your blood glucose results are not consistent with your diabetes history, how you feel, or if you think the results are not accurate (high or low).
Diabetes Glucose Monitor Lawsuits
Diabetes is a life-threatening chronic disease that must be managed on a daily basis. Abbott advertised the FreeStyle Libre 3 as a cutting-edge new technology that could help make managing diabetes easier.
