Ford F-150 Brake Failure (2015-2016)

In August 2016, the NHTSA began investigating 25 reports of total brake failure on 2015 and 2016 model-year Ford F-150 trucks. Drivers reported pushing the pedal to the floor with complete loss of braking power. On the 2016 models, no warning lights or chimes went off. Several drivers said they ran red lights, rolled into intersections, or swerved off the road to avoid other cars. In one case, a driver narrowly missed hitting a child in a school crosswalk. No injuries or accidents were reported.

Ford F-150 Brake Failures (2013-2014)

In March 2016, the NHTSA opened an investigation into 33 complaints of total brake failure on Ford F-150 pickup trucks from model-years 2013 and 2014. According to investigators, the brake pedal went to the floor with complete loss of brake power. Several mechanics diagnosed the problem as brake fluid leaking from the master cylinder to the brake booster.

In May 2016, Ford recalled about 271,000 F-150 pickup trucks from the 2013-2014 model years with 3.5-liter V6 engines because brake fluid can leak from the master cylinder. The company reported 9 crashes. One driver had a minor knee injury while braking. Dealers will replace the brake booster if they find leaks from the master cylinder.

Ford F-150 Electric Brake Vacuum Pump Failure

In June 2015, the NHTSA investigated complaints that the power brake assist can fail on about 250,000 Ford F-150 pickup trucks from the 2011-2012 model-years that also have 3.5-liter engines. The investigation closed a year later with no recall. In October, investigators said they found 432 complaints, 7 crashes, one injury, and 6,476 warranty claims related to electric brake vacuum pumps. In most cases, the problem happened after starting a cold engine or at low speeds when the power brake boost was used.

How to Stop a Car With No Brakes

  • Don’t panic!
  • Take your foot off the accelerator
  • Shift into a lower gear
  • Don’t turn the ignition off — it could shut down power steering
  • Give the brakes another shot — pump the brakes several times to rebuild pressure, or apply strong pressure to the brake pedal
  • Carefully use the emergency brake, keeping release button engaged
  • Work your way out of traffic and get off the road
