Fitbit Recalls 1.7 Million Ionic Smartwatches for Burn Hazard
In March 2022, Fitbit recalled 1.7 million Fitbit Ionic smartwatches worldwide due to a risk of severe burn injuries from the lithium-ion battery in the watch overheating.
How Many People Were Injured?
There were 115 reports in the U.S. and 59 reports internationally of the Ionic smartwatch battery overheating. In some cases, the battery became extremely hot.
In the U.S., at least 78 people were burned, including 4 people with 2nd-degree burns and 2 people with 3rd-degree burns. Globally, there were an additional 40 reports of people who were burned by their Ionic smartwatch.

Where Were They Sold?
Fitbit Ionic smartwatches were sold nationwide in the U.S. at Best Buy, Kohl’s, Target, and other stores. They were also sold online at Amazon.com and Fitbit.com from September 2017 to December 2021 for between $200 and $330.
Is This Related to Skin Irritation?
No. On their website, Fitbit said the Ionic issue is not related to skin irritation, which was a previous problem that led to a recall for around 1 million Fitbit Force activity-tracking wristbands in March 2014. In that case, around 10,000 people reported skin irritation, blisters, and burns.
