ALDI Falafel E. coli Outbreak Reported in 6 States
In October 2022, health officials reported that 20 people in 6 states were infected with E. coli after eating Earth Grown Vegan Frozen Falafel that was sold exclusively by ALDI grocery stores.
Falafel Recalled for E. coli Risk
On October 7, 2022, Cuisine Innovations Unlimited LLC announced a recall for the following falafel products:
- Earth Grown® Vegan Traditional Falafels (12 oz. box) — UPC 4099100224337 — All Lot Codes
- Earth Grown® Vegan Garlic & Herb Falafels (12 oz. box) — UPC 4099100224344 — All Lot Codes
The falafels came in two flavors (Traditional and Garlic & Herb) with lot numbers: 1472, 1481, 1531, 1532, 1541, 1552, 1561, 1581, 1601, 1611, 1612, 1661, 1682, 1732, 1752, 1762, 1782, 1802, or 1812.
What Happened?
The recalled falafel products were distributed and sold exclusively by ALDI in Texas and dozens of other states. ALDI said it “immediately removed the affected products from all stores in the U.S.”
How Many People Got E. coli?
According to the CDC outbreak investigation on October 7, 2022, there were 20 confired E. coli illnesses since July 2022. The illnesses were reported in 6 states: Florida (2), Iowa (1), Kansas (1), Michigan (11), Ohio (1), and Wisconsin (4).
What is E. coli?
Shiga-toxin-producing E. coli (STEC) is a dangerous strain of E. coli that produces a powerful toxin. People who are infected with STEC can develop symptoms within 1 to 10 days.
The symptoms may include diarrhea (which may be bloody), severe stomach cramps, vomiting, and sometimes other complications. Children are particularly vulnerable to a life-threatening type of kidney failure called Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS).
