Bayer Stops Selling Essure in U.S.
July 2018 — Bayer will stop all sales of Essure implants at the end of the year, making the U.S. the last country where the controversial device was still sold. Bayer stands by the safety and effectiveness of Essure, and claims it was a “business decision” based on a 40% drop in sales.
Essure Linked to Safety Risks
Doctors are warning about serious safety problems with Essure, a permanent non-surgical sterilization implant made by Bayer.
Essure consists of a nickel-titanium coil coated in polyester that is placed in a woman’s fallopian tubes, where it elicits an inflammatory reaction. Over several months, scar tissue closes off the fallopian tubes.
Since it was approved by the FDA in 2002, over 10,000 women have reported severe side effects. One woman suffering from chronic pain told NPR:
“All of a sudden it hurt to have to move my body to get out of bed, to do anything. It feels like you’ve been hit by a truck every day of your life. For me, it’s been a nightmare. I mean, this device literally ruined my life.”
In September 2015, the British Medical Journal published a study showing that 2.4% of women who got Essure needed follow-up surgery, compared to 0.2% of women who underwent traditional “tube tying” procedures — a 10-fold increased risk. The FDA is now investigating safety issues with the device.
