What is an EFP?

Explosively Formed Penetrators (EFPs) are advanced armor-piercing weapon. Terrorists used EFPs as roadside bombs to attack U.S. troops inside armored vehicles, Humvees and M1 Abrams tanks during the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. EFPs were Iranian-designed bombs that were used by Afghan Taliban fighters and Iraqi insurgents.

How Do EFPs Work?

An EFP is about the size and shape of a coffee can, but with one side that is covered in a concave metal disk that is made of copper or steel. When the EFP explodes, the metal disk forms an extremely hot slug of molten metal that can penetrate armor, causing severe injuries to troops inside. In some cases, multiple charges would be used to increase the odds of destroying the vehicle and causing casualties.

Who Qualifies For Compensation?

U.S. veterans who served in Iraq or Afghanistan may qualify for compensation for EFP injuries, including mental health disorders such as PTSD, through the Anti-Terrorism Fund. This fund is also called The U.S. Victims of State-Sponsored Terrorism Fund (USVSST).

Eligibility Requirements

Our law firm is investigating cases involving veterans who:

  • Served in Iraq from 2004-present, or Afghanistan from 2006-present
  • Were involved in an IED / EFP attack with a specific attack date (you need to know the date or have the information available)
  • You suffered an injury in the attack where:
    • You needed medical treatment for a physical injury; OR
    • You were diagnosed with PTSD due to the attack

What is the Anti-Terrorism Fund?

The Anti-Terrorism Fund, or USVSST, has paid over $6 billion to people who were victims of state-sponsored terrorist attacks. The fund has paid compensation to 9/11 victims and other eligible claimants (or surviving family members).

How Many People Have Been Paid?

Since it was established in 2015, The Anti-Terrorism Fund has paid money to over 12,117 victims of 9/11 and another 3,652 people who were harmed by other acts of international state-sponsored terrorism.

Where Does The Money Come From?

Apart from an initial $1 billion appropriation from Congress, most of the money has come from forfeiture proceeds, penalties, and fines from civil and criminal matters involving prohibited transactions with state sponsors of terrorism, according to the Justice Department.

Why Are EFPs So Dangerous?

EFPs were particularly dangerous because they were hard to avoid. The attack could easily cause severe injuries or death to people inside the vehicles, causing gruesome injuries, amputations, and bleeding.

Some of the most serious risks of being hit by an EFP include:

  • Amputations
  • Bilateral lower limb amputations
  • Extensive soft tissue damagE
  • Bleeding
  • Burns
  • Bone fractures
  • Organ damage
  • Loss of lower limbs (legs and feet)
  • Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI)
