January 3, 2011 — If you use dietary supplements manufactured by Eclectic Institute, you may be affected by a new recall of products containing Gotu Kola (Centella asiatica) and Bladderwrack (Fucus vesiculosus), because the products may be contaminated with harmful Salmonella.
What is Salmonella? It is an organism that is found in the intestines and feces of humans and animals. It can cause serious illness when it is transmitted to food and then eaten by people. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) estimates that 1.4 million people suffer a Salmonella-related infection every year, and more than 400 people die from it every year.
The symptoms of a Salmonella infection most commonly appear within 8-72 hours after the food was eaten, and disappear within 4-7 days. Symptoms include:
- Headache
- Chills
- Fever
- Diarrhea
- Nausea
- Vomiting
- Abdominal pain
Salmonella infections can be life-threatening for infants, young children, pregnant women and their unborn babies, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems. In the serious cases, it can infect the bloodstream. It can also cause severe illnesses, such as arterial infections, endocarditis, and arthritis.
Eclectic Institute is voluntarily recalling Gotu Kola products sold between September 14, 2011 and December 14, 2011. They are also recalling Bladderwrack products sold between July 14, 2011 and December 14, 2011. These products are freeze-dried capsules sold in glass or plastic bottles.
If you use these products, do not throw your contaminated supplements away. You will need the package to look up your lot number. The lot number is located on the bottom of the label. You can use the table below to check if your lot number is included in the recall. If it is, the manufacturer recommends that you return your products to Eclectic Institute headquarters in Sandy, Oregon, for a full refund. The headquarters are located at 36350 SE Industrial Way, Sandy, OR. For more information, you can call the company at 1-800-332-4372, Monday through Friday, 7:30 AM to 4:30 PM.
