What Happened?
No illnesses were linked to Dynacare Baby Powder, but asbestos is known to cause cancer. The health risks are well-established.
The original recall was announced in September 2024, after FDA tests “revealed that the finished products contained asbestos.”
In October 2024, Dynarex expanded the recall after discovering that the same bulk talc material was used in over 25,000 other bottles of Dynacare Baby Powder. The company explained: “Upon further investigation, we have identified additional lots of products that may contain asbestos due to using the same bulk talc material.”
Why Is There Asbestos In Talcum Powder?
Baby powder and many other consumer products contain talcum powder, which is a soft white powder that is made from the mineral talc. Asbestos is also a mineral, and both asbestos and talc are commonly found together in the same mineral deposits in the earth.
What Is The Problem?
The problem is that asbestos is a carcinogen (known to cause cancer) and it is challenging for manufacturers to find talcum powder that is not naturally contaminated with asbestos. They must take steps to ensure their products are asbestos-free, or recall dangerous products.
FDA Tests Find Asbestos in Dynacare Baby Powder
The FDA routinely tests baby powder and other cosmetic products for asbestos contamination in the talc. According to the recall: “If talc mining sites are not carefully chosen or if proper steps are not taken to adequately purify the talc ore, it may contain asbestos.”
How Are People Exposed to Asbestos?
People who use contaminated baby powder can breathe asbestos into their lungs, which may pose a long-term risk of mesothelioma. There are also thousands of lawsuits for women who developed ovarian cancer after using baby powder for feminine hygiene purposes.
Have Lawsuits Been Filed?
Yes. Baby powder lawsuits have been filed by thousands of people with cancer, mesothelioma, and ovarian cancer. These lawsuits involve people who used Johnson’s Baby Powder, Cashmere Bouquet, and several other products with talcum powder.
What Do These Lawsuits Claim?
All of these lawsuits accuse the manufacturers of failing to adequately warn customers about the risk of cancer from baby powder due to contamination in the talcum powder ingredient, as well as the long-term risk of developing life-threatening cancers like mesothelioma.
