What is the DreamStation?
DreamStation CPAP Machines send a constant flow of air pressure into the throat and lungs, which helps keep the patient’s airway open when they are sleeping. This effectively prevents the patient from pausing their breathing due to obstructive sleep apnea.
Philips DreamStation Recall
In July 2021, the FDA and Philips Respironics recalled certain DreamStation Machines due to serious health risks, including cancer and lung damage associated with the breakdown of sound-abatement foam.
How Many People Have Been Injured?
The recalled breathing machines have been linked to more than 1,200 complaints and more than 100 injuries, according to the FDA.
Was My DreamStation Recalled?
The recall involves all DreamStation breathing machines that were manufactured before April 26, 2021, including continuous and non-continuous DreamStation ventilators, which are used by millions of patients with obstructive sleep apnea and other breathing disorders.
The DreamStation recall involves the following non-continuous ventilators:
- DreamStation 1
- DreamStation Go CPAP
- DreamStation GO APAP
- DreamStation Auto CPAP
- DreamStation BiPAP
Philips also recalled the following DreamStation continuous ventilators (non-life supporting devices):
- DreamStation ASV
- DreamStation ST
- DreamStation AVAPS
Toxic Foam Linked to Lung Injuries & Cancer
The recalled DreamStation machines were designed with a type of foam in the same tube that carries the air that a user breathes. The problem is that this foam — called polyester-based polyurethane (PE-PUR) — is also extremely toxic. It can break down into tiny particles of foam, which are then swallowed or inhaled by a person using the DreamStation machine. PE-PUR foam can also release toxic gases.
