DreamStation 2 CPAP Machine Linked to Fires & Burn Injuries

In November 2023, the FDA warned the public about potential fire hazard and a risk of burn injuries from the Philips DreamStation 2 CPAP Machine, which is a medical device that can treat sleep apnea and other sleep-related breathing disorders.

What is the Problem?

The FDA said it received around 300 reports of the DreamStation 2 overheating, catching on fire, smoking, burning, causing burn injuries, and showing other signs of overheating while the machine was in use.

The number of reports increased dramatically after August 2023, for unknown reasons. The FDA and Philips are investigating what is causing the DreamStation 2 machines to overheat and catch on fire:

“This is a developing situation … the thermal issues may be related to an electrical and/or a mechanical malfunction of the machine, which may cause it to overheat in certain situations.”

What is the Risk?

People who use the DreamStation 2 may suffer burn injuries. The machine is typically used at night while patients are sleeping, which increases the safety hazard if it catches on fire or overheats.

What Should I Do?

The FDA is warning patients to carefully monitor DreamStation 2 machines for signs of overheating, especially before going to bed or falling asleep.

Unplug the CPAP machine and do not use it if:

  • you smell burning, smoke, or any unusual odors,
  • there is a change in the appearance of the CPAP machine,
  • there are unexplained changes to the CPAP machine’s performance,
  • water is spilled into the CPAP machine,
  • you hear unusual sounds coming from the CPAP machine.

Carefully Check CPAP Machine Before & After Every Use

Patients should carefully inspect and examine the CPAP machine before and after every use for “unusual smells or changes in its appearance. Some problems may only be noticeable when the machine is running, so pay attention to any differences in the CPAP machine as you prepare for bed, before you fall asleep.”

Let Heater Plate & Hot Water Tank Cool Down

You should also let the heater plate and water tank cool down for around 15 minutes before removing it to reduce the risk of burns: “You could be burned if you touch the heater plate, come in contact with the heated water, or touch the humidifier water tank pan.”

CPAP Machine Lawsuits Against Philips

Philips is currently facing thousands of lawsuits involving the DreamStation 1 and millions of other breathing machines, which were recalled in June 2021 due to toxic sound-abatement foam and gases.

These lawsuits claim that Philips waited to recall the DreamStation 1 until after they had finished developing the DreamStation 2. Many of the DreamStation 2 machines linked to overheating problems were provided to patients who were affected by the DreamStation 1 recall.

What is the DreamStation 2?

The DreamStation 2 is a type of medical device called a Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) Machine, which is used to treat sleep-related breathing disorders (most commonly sleep apnea). Patients use a mask to breathe air that is provided by the machine. The machine uses mild air pressure and a humidifier to provide moistened, warm air while the patient sleeps.
