Ditropan and Ditropan XL

Ditropan® (generic: oxybutynin) and the long-acting version, Ditropan XL®, are two drug for an overactive bladder that are made by Janssen Pharmaceuticals.

Ditropan treats overactive bladder symptoms by relaxing muscles that cause involuntary muscle contractions in the bladder. This prevent urinary incontinence, frequent urination, or an urgent need to urinate.

What is Dementia?

Dementia is a progressive brain-damaging disease that occurs in older adults, but it is not a normal part of the aging process. Instead, dementia is a disease that is caused by the destruction of nerve cells in the brain — sometimes due to toxic side effects of medications.

Ditropan and Dementia Risk in Older Adults

Ditropan relaxes the bladder muscles by blocking acetylcholine, which is also a neurotransmitter that is crucial for memory and learning.

This is why it is well-known that Ditropan can have cognitive side effects, such as confusion or memory loss, especially in older adults who are just starting Ditropan or increasing the dose.

The label on Ditropan includes warnings about confusion, hallucinations, worsening of pre-existing dementia or Parkinson’s disease — but there may be severe long-term risks, like dementia.

50% Increased Risk of Dementia Linked to Overactive Bladder Drugs

In June 2019, a study published in JAMA Internal Medicine estimated a 50% increased risk of dementia for patients on overactive bladder drugs, as well as many other common medications in the same drug-class (called anticholinergic drugs) that also work by blocking acetylcholine.

About Class Actions

When a large number of people are harmed by a medication with dangerous side effects, judges may decide to create a Multi-District Litigation (MDL). The MDL process is similar to a class action, because many lawsuits are centralized in one court, under one judge.

As the MDL moves forward, judges will typically pick a few case to go to trial. These trials might end in a jury awarding compensation to the victim, or deciding the drug-maker was not at fault.

Depending on how a jury responds to the evidence, the outcome of these trials can help lawyers negotiate a settlement or another resolution in most of the other lawsuits in the MDL. This process is far more efficient than having every single case go to trial.
