FDA Warning for Flesh Eating Infections
August 2018 — The FDA published a Safety Warning about the risk of flesh-eating genital infections (Fournier’s gangrene) associated with type-2 diabetes drugs in a class known as Sodium-Glucose Cotransportrt-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors. The FDA also ordered drug-manufacturers to add this side effect to the warning labels on all SGLT2 diabetes drugs.
What is Fournier’s Gangrene?
Fournier’s gangrene, also known as “necrotizing fasciitis,” is an infection near the genitals or anus that progresses rapidly and destroys tissues. About 1 in 3 cases are deadly. It can rapidly spread to the bloodstream and cause organ failure or death.
Symptoms of Flesh Eating Infections
The initial symptoms of Fournier’s gangrene include sudden pain, tenderness, redness, or swelling in the genital area. Other symptoms may include a high fever, generally feeling unwell, unpleasant or rotten odor coming from the skin, or cracking sound when touching the skin.
