Cinnamon Recalled for Lead Poisoning Risk

In March 2024, Dollar Tree and Family Dollar stores nationwide recalled certain batches of Supreme Tradition® Cinnamon after it tested positive for high levels of lead.

How To Identify Recalled Cinnamon

The recall included 2.25-oz bottles of Supreme Tradition Ground Cinnamon, including the following lot codes and best-by dates:

  • 09/29/25 09E8
  • 04/17/25 04E11
  • 12/19/25 12C2
  • 04/12/25 04ECB12
  • 08/24/25 08A
  • 04/21/25 04E5
  • 09/22/2025 09E20

FDA Safety Warning for Lead in Cinnamon

The FDA issued a Safety Warning after finding high levels of lead in cinnamon from several discount stores, including:

  • Supreme Tradition® Cinnamon (Dollar Tree and Family Dollar stores)
  • La Fiesta® Cinnamon (La Superior and Super Mercados)
  • Marcum® Cinnamon (Save A Lot)
  • MK® Cinnamon (SF Supermarket)
  • Swad® Cinnamon (Patel Brothers)
  • El Chilar® Cinnamon (La Joya Morelense)

Hundreds of Children Got Lead Poisoning from Applesauce

The FDA began testing cinnamon after at least 500 children got lead poisoning from cinnamon-flavored applesauce pouches that were sold at Dollar Tree, Family Dollar, Weis, and Schnucks stores nationwide.

The applesauce pouches contained cinnamon that was illegally added with lead chromate, a toxic metal that criminals use to add color and weight to ground spices in order to increase its monetary value.

How Much Lead Was In Cinnamon?

FDA tests on the ground cinnamon from Dollar Tree and Family Dollar stores found lead levels between 2.03 and 3.4 parts per million (ppm). This poses a health risk, but it is much lower than the amount of lead found in the recalled applesauce pouches, which had 2,270 ppm to 5,110 ppm of lead.

What is the Risk?

Tragically, the people who eat cinnamon that it tainted with lead chromate can suffer from lead poisoning and chromium poisoning. These toxic heavy metals can have severe long-term side effects, especially for children, due to their smaller size and faster growth.

Lead Poisoning in Children

Lead poisoning in children can cause brain damage, lower IQ, learning disabilities, behavior problems, under-performance in school, organ damage, and other severe side effects.
