Cervical Cancer Screening Scandal in Ireland
Thousands of women in Ireland received free pap smear tests to check for cervical cancer as part of a publicly-funded program called Cervical Check. The test results were outsourced to Clinical Pathology Laboratories Inc. in Texas. In 2014, an audit discovered that hundreds of test results were inaccurate — but the women were not informed.
What is the problem?
Between 2010 and 2014, there were 208 women in Ireland who were told that their test was negative for cervical cancer when it was actually positive. At least 17 women died by the time the women were informed of the inaccurate results. Furthermore, around 1,400 women developed cervical cancer after testing negative between 2010-2014.
Texas Lab Pays $3 Million Settlement
The scandal emerged after Clinical Pathology Laboratories Inc. agreed to pay a $3 million settlement to Vicky Phelan, 43, a terminally ill woman from Ireland who received inaccurate test results.
Phelan was given a negative result from Clinical Pathology Laboratories Inc. in 2011 — but when she tested positive for advanced cervical cancer in 2014, a re-evaluation of her previous test showed that the laboratory missed obvious indicators for cervical cancer.
In January 2018, Phelan was told that she has less than 1 year to live. Tragically, doctors believe she likely could have been cured if she had been given accurate test results, according to her lawyer:
“If she had been diagnosed in 2011, there would have been a 95 percent chance of a cure. Instead she is left with what is now an incurable cancer.”
