October 16, 2018 — Early next year, all 15 Catholic dioceses in Texas will release the names of clergy members who were “credibly accused” of sexually abusing a child since 1950.
The list of names will be released by January 31, according to Bishop Edward Burns of the Dallas diocese, as part of their effort “to protect children from sexual abuse” and promote “healing and a restoration of trust.” The list will be updated as new information becomes available.
The investigation came after a former pastor named Edmundo Paredes was accused of sexually abusing 3 boys more than a decade ago, as well as stealing church funds.
The Dallas Diocese hired 6 investigators, made up of former FBI agents, former Texas state troopers and law enforcement experts.
Scandals have erupted nationwide as more victims of child sexual abuse by Catholic clergy have come forward to name their abusers.
In August, a grand jury report revealed that at least 1,000 children in Pennsylvania were victims of sex abuse by priests over the past 70 years and that the church either ignored it or actively covered it up.
