Canned Tuna Recalled in Texas

In February 2025, Tri-Union Seafood announced a recall for several brands of canned tuna that could pose a risk of botulism due to a defective lid.

What is the Problem?

No illnesses were reported. Tri-Union Seafood explained that it was notified by a supplier of a problem with the “easy open” pull tab lids, which could potentially pose a risk of botulism (especially over time).

According to the recall warning:

“The “easy open” pull tab can lid on limited products encountered a manufacturing defect that may compromise the integrity of the product seal (especially over time), causing it to leak, or worse, be contaminated with clostridium botulinum, a potentially fatal form of food poisoning.”

What is the Risk?

Consumers are being warned not to eat these canned tuna products, even if they do not look or smell spoiled. Food that is contaminated with the toxin (poison) that causes botulism may not look, smell, or taste spoiled, but even just a taste could cause paralysis or death.

What Causes Botulism?

Botulism is an illness that is caused by eating food that contains a powerful nerve toxin (poison) that is produced by the growth of a bacteria called Clostridium botulinum.

The botulism bacteria is common in dirt and dust, but it rarely makes people sick in the environment. If it gets inside canned food, however, the bacteria can grow and produce a nerve toxin. People who eat this toxin in canned food can develop a paralytic illness called botulism.

The bacteria that causes botulism can survive, grow, and release toxins in low-oxygen environments, such as canned food. The bacteria forms a hard protective coating, which can help it survive for years.

How Dangerous is Botulism?

The botulism toxin is one of the most toxic substances known. Even microscopic amounts can be deadly. The symptoms usually start within 48 hours of eating contaminated food. The paralysis spreads to the arms, legs, body, and breathing muscles, which can lead to death. Just a sip of a canned food that is contaminated with the botulism toxin can cause lifelong nerve damage, paralysis, or death.
