BRP Linked to Can-Am ATV Speed Limiter Recall

In May 2026, BRP issued a recall covering approximately 2,820 Can-Am Outlander Pro and Max Pro All-Terrain Vehicles. The recall was announced by the CPSC on May 14, 2026 under recall number 26-482.

According to the CPSC, the ATV’s Speed Limiter Mode can malfunction and cause unexpected speed and acceleration, posing a serious risk of injury or death from a crash.

BRP has received 1 report of a speed limiter failure that resulted in sudden acceleration and flipped the ATV, leaving the rider with scrapes and bruises.

What Is the Defect?

The CPSC describes the defect this way:

“The ATV’s speed limiter control can malfunction, causing unexpected speed and acceleration, posing a serious risk of injury or death from crash hazard.”

The “Speed Limiter Mode” is meant to cap how fast the ATV can travel. It is often used by parents who allow teen riders, by training programs, and by riders who are new to high-powered ATVs. A sudden, unexpected burst of speed can throw a rider off, flip the ATV, or send the vehicle off the trail before the rider has time to react.

Which Can-Am ATVs Are Affected?

The recall covers the following Can-Am Outlander Pro and Max Pro ATVs equipped with Speed Limiter Mode:

  • Model year 2025 and 2026 Can-Am Outlander 500 or 700 Pro and Max Pro ATVs
  • Model year 2023 and 2024 Can-Am Outlander Pro and Max Pro ATVs that received an Engine Control Module (ECM) software update at a dealership on or after February 3, 2026
  • Colors: Tan, Green, Camo, and Gray
  • Price range: $8,000 to $13,000

The model year is identified by the 10th character of the 17-digit VIN: P = 2023, R = 2024, S = 2025, T = 2026. The VIN label is on the front right side of the vehicle on the frame. “OUTLANDER PRO” is displayed on the front of the vehicle, and “Can-Am” branding is on the left rear fender.

Where Were They Sold?

The recalled ATVs were sold at authorized Can-Am Off-Road dealers across the United States, including Texas, from March 2023 through April 2026.

Can-Am Outlander Pro models are popular across Texas ranchland, hunting properties, and oilfield work sites in regions like the Hill Country, East Texas, and West Texas.

The CPSC says consumers should stop using Speed Limiter Mode immediately and contact a Can-Am Off-Road dealer to schedule a free software update, which takes less than one hour. For updates, visit the official CPSC recall page or the Can-Am Off-Road safety recalls page.

How Many People Were Injured?

BRP has received 1 report of injury connected to the speed limiter defect. The reported incident involved a speed limiter failure that caused sudden acceleration and flipped the ATV, resulting in scrapes and bruises to the rider.

The CPSC has not confirmed deaths or hospitalizations connected to this defect, but the agency warns that the malfunction poses a “serious risk of injury or death.” Official counts also tend to lag behind real-world incidents, since many ATV crashes are reported to police or insurers rather than to the manufacturer.

If you were injured in a crash involving a Can-Am Outlander Pro or Max Pro ATV in Texas, and you believe the Speed Limiter Mode may have malfunctioned, our lawyers want to hear from you.

Texas has one of the largest off-road and ATV-using populations in the country. Can-Am Outlander Pro and Max Pro ATVs are widely used on ranches, deer leases, oilfield service routes, and rural properties across Texas, from the Panhandle to the Rio Grande Valley.

When a defect in a high-powered ATV causes unexpected acceleration, the consequences for a rider, a passenger, or a bystander can be severe.

Texans who were injured in a Can-Am ATV crash that may have involved a speed limiter malfunction may be entitled to compensation for medical bills, lost wages, pain and suffering, and other damages. A Texas product liability lawyer can help you understand your legal options.
