FDA Safety Warning for Campath
November 29, 2018 — The FDA has required a Boxed Warning on the leukemia drug Campath® (alemtuzumab) after rare but serious reports of patients who had strokes or blood vessel tears in the head or neck (arterial dissection):
“Patients or their caregivers should seek emergency treatment as soon as possible if the patient experiences signs or symptoms of a stroke or tears in the lining of the head and neck arteries, called arterial dissection.”
What is Campath?
Campath® is a medication that treats B-Cell Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (B-CLL), which is a blood cancer. Campath is a type of drug known as a recombinant DNA-derived humanized monoclonal antibody. It works by stopping the growth of cancer cells.
Alemtuzumab is also sold under the brand-name Lemtrada for multiple sclerosis.
Campath Side Effects

- Bleeding in the brain
- Ischemic strokes
- Hemorrhagic strokes

What is the Problem?
In nearly 5 years since the FDA approved alemtuzumab for relapsing forms of multiple sclerosis (MS), there have been 13 reports of patients worldwide who suffered a stroke or arterial dissection. One patient died after suffering severe bleeding in the brain.
Early Symptoms Include Headache and Neck Pain
The FDA warns that the diagnosis of a stroke or arterial dissection is often complicated because early symptoms — headache and neck pain — are vague and not specific. Therefore, doctors should promptly evaluate patients who develop headache or neck pain.
Symptoms of Stroke or Arterial Dissection
- Severe headache or neck pain
- Sudden numbness or weakness
- Sudden confusion, trouble speaking, or understanding
- Sudden vision problems
- Sudden dizziness, trouble walking, or loss of balance
