FDA Bans Bulk Caffeine Sales
In April 2018, the FDA banned the sale of highly-concentrated pure caffeine products due to the significant health risks, particularly the risk that bulk caffeine will be used at excessive and dangerous doses.
“In fact, less than two tablespoons of some formulations of powdered, pure caffeine can be deadly to most adults, while even smaller amounts can be life threatening to children.”
Caffeine Overdose Linked to 2 Deaths
The FDA warned that bulk packages of highly-concentrated pure caffeine have been linked to at least 2 deaths in otherwise healthy individuals.
Caffeine Overdose Death
The symptoms of a severe caffeine overdose include:
- Jitters, tremors, or restlessness
- Trouble breathing
- Vomiting
- Hallucinations
- Chest pain
- Fast heartbeat
- Irregular heart rhythm
- Heart palpitations
- Muscle twitches or spasms
- Seizures
- Coma
- Cardiac arrest
- Death
What is the Problem?
A single teaspoon can contain as much caffeine as 28 cups of coffee. The recommended “safe” serving is 200-mg of caffeine — which equals 1/16 of a teaspoon of pure caffeine powder or approximately 2.5 teaspoons of a liquid caffeine. The problem is that powdered caffeine is sold in large bags and liquid forms are sold in gallons. Consumers can easily incorrectly measure and accidentally overdose.
