Burrito Delight Salmonella Outbreak

On February 23, 2018, health officials confirmed that 12 people were infected with Salmonella after eating food from two different Burrito Delight Mexican food restaurants near Denver, Colorado.

Six of the people were infected with Salmonella after attending events at Aims Community College on February 9 and 13, 2018 that were catered by Burrito Delight.

Four people were infected with Salmonella after eating at Burrito Delight in Fort Lupton. Two other people got sick after eating food from Burrito Delight that was catered by a private company.

What is the problem?

Both of the Burrito Delight locations were forced to temporarily close by health officials in Weld County, Colorado. Inspections of the location in Fort Lupton identified numerous food-safety violations.

The violations included employees not washing their hands, a dead rat located behind a reach-in cooler in a trap, food stored at improper temperatures, and more.

When Will Burrito Delight Re-Open?

The public is not currently at risk of illness. Burrito Delight will remain closed until the restaurants pas inspections that shows they are in compliance with state health-code laws in Colorado.

Before Burrito Delight is allowed to re-open, they must re-train or hire new staff, all employees must test negative for Salmonella, food must be replaced, and the restaurants must be sanitized.

Salmonella Food Poisoning

It is possible that more cases of Salmonella will be linked to this outbreak because it can take up to 4 weeks for an illness to be confirmed. The symptoms of Salmonella usually appear within 6-72 hours after eating contaminated food. They last for 4 to 7 days.

According to Mark E. Wallace, the executive director of the Weld County Health Department:

Salmonella is a bacteria that causes symptoms like diarrhea, upset stomach, fever and occasionally vomiting. Anyone who suspects they became ill should contact their health care provider.”
