Buffalo Burgers & Ground Bison Recalled for E. coli Risk
July 2019 — Northfork Bison Distributions Inc. of Canada has recalled bison buffalo burgers and ground bison meat in the U.S. because it may be contaminated with E. coli.
How Many People Are Sick?
The E. coli outbreak from bison meat has sickened at least 21 people in 7 states between March and June 2019, according to the outbreak investigation from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) on July 16, 2019.
Illnesses were reported in Connecticut (1), Florida (4), Michigan (1), Missouri (1), New Jersey (2), New York (9), and Pennsylvania (3).
Eight people were hospitalized, according to the CDC. No deaths were reported. No one has developed Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS), a life-threatening type of kidney failure that occurs in 5-10% of people who are infected with E. coli.
Buffalo Burger Recall
Northfork Bison Distributions recalled ground bison and bison patties (referred to as Bison Burgers and/or Buffalo Burgers) produced between February 22, 2019, and April 30, 2019.
The recalled bison products were distributed throughout the Eastern and Central United States.
The bison patties were sold in 4×4-ounce blue boxes that are marked with the “Northfork Bison” brand. The recall includes products with expiration dates up through October 8, 2020.
Some of the recalled bison products are also labeled with other brand-names, such as:

- Northfork Canadian Bison Ranch
- Sayers Brook Bison Ranch
E. coli Food Poisoning
The symptoms of E. coli vary for each person, but often include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea (often bloody), and vomiting. Most people get better within 5 to 7 days, but some infections can be life-threatening or deadly.
