Who Has The Highest Risk?
Eating food that is contaminated with Listeria can cause listeriosis, which is a serious food poisoning infection. Anyone can get sick, but Listeria primarily affects older adults, people with weakened immune systems, pregnant women and their newborns.
What Should I Do?
People in the higher-risk categories who experience flu-like symptoms within 2 months after eating contaminated food should seek medical care and tell the health care provider about eating contaminated food.
What Symptoms Can Listeria Cause?
People who eat food that is contaminated with Listeria may show symptoms as early as the first day, or as late as 70 days afterward. These symptoms may include:
- Fever
- Muscle aches
- Headache
- Stiff neck
- Confusion
- Loss of balance
- Convulsions
- Diarrhea or other gastrointestinal symptoms
- Flu-like symptoms
Listeria Infections Can Be Severe Or Deadly
Listeria infections can be very serious, or even deadly. Listeria is known to cause invasive infections, which occur when the bacteria spreads beyond the digestive system to other parts of the body.
Invasive infections with Listeria can cause bloodstream infections (sepsis), meningitis (inflammation of the brain and spinal cord), organ failure, brain damage, and death. Pregnant women may suffer a miscarriage or stillbirth, or have a baby who is infected at birth and suffers from lifelong disabilities.
How Much Money Is My Food Poisoning Lawsuit Worth?
Eating a sandwich, wrap, or salad should not end in hospitalization or death. When major retailers sell contaminated food, the victims are innocent consumers.
Food poisoning lawsuits involving Listeria may involve significant financial losses. The victims may be seeking justice and compensation for medical bills, lost income, physical and emotional pain and suffering, or the wrongful death of a family member.
